Pizzas are items that are made of flat oven cooked dough that is loaded with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheeses, and a wide array of meat and veggies. Though the meal originated in ancient Greece, pizza quickly became popular in other countries and is currently the most devoured foods on the planet. In the United States, several different kinds of pizza can be eaten based on the exact location you’re in. For generations, east coast and west coast residents have been arguing over who’s dish is made better. However for our friends up north, the family managed Panzerotto Pizza is the clear winner. And after learning the history of the Panzerotto Pizza chain, it is simple to see why this little franchise is so cherished.
Panzerotto styled pizza is sometimes referred to as a smaller doughier calzone. Mozzarella cheeses and tomatoes are the most popular ingredients but the dishes can also be stuffed with pepperoni, onions, and other items. The dish originated in Italy in the 40′s but has become extremely popular in several Canadian cities.
The chain originated with its first downtown Toronto location in 1976. The establishment, which was located on Yonge St., was operated and owned by a man named Alex Schiavone. Alex began his cooking experience in the early 50′s as a beloved gourmet chef.
In 1969, Alex opened up a tiny Italian cafe in Ontario and took the next couple of years focusing on his skills. It was during this period that he began serving Panzerotto style dishes to his customers. The Panzerotto pizza is a calzone type of item that was created in a small village in southern Italy.
The dish became a hit instantly with the customers in Ontario and they began demanding it in big quantities. In fact, it was so popular that the business‘s owner decided to sell the small Italian restaurant and opened one in Toronto that would sell the new dish predominantly.
Sales of the Panzerotto dishes were very slow at first due to the fact that the pizza style was virtually unknown at the time. But eventually, its supporters were able to spread the news of the tasty new treat and won over its detractors. In early 1980, Alex Schiavone decided to take advantage of his business‘s newfound success. He attracted a number of investors and expanded his company through franchising opportunities.
The Panzerotto Pizza company has been going strong ever since and Alex and his immediate family have remained very involved in its operations. There are currently thirty five Panzerottos operating across Canada and the Northern United States. And Alex and his sons Frank, Joe, and Vito have over seventy five years of combined experience between them and are integral parts of the day to day operations of both the Head Office and the various store locations.
As of April 1995, the company was the first to provide city wide pizza delivery via the internet. Interested users were able to visit the restaurant’s website and custom order their favorite meals. Through the use of technology that was extremely modern and high tech at the time, orders were routed directly to call centers and then processed for delivery. The beloved pizza chain, not content to stop there, is still constantly evaluating and upgrading their customer service skills.
Home to the original Panzerotto pizza since 1976, Canada’s most trusted Restaurant Franchise offers wings and Pizza Delivery Toronto service to location such as Etobicoke, North York, and Toronto.
