What’s your approach to handling magazine clutter in the house?
I only have a few magazine subscriptions but I really like most of the magazines I subscribe to and have a hard time throwing a few of them out. But at the same time, I know it’s not practical nor useful to save every magazine – I’m pretty good at throwing out the ones I know I’ll never read again. But what do you do about magazines like Better Homes and Gardens or Real Simple that have lots of great everyday recipes and tips that you want to save?
Do you have an approach or technique to managing magazine clippings or magazine clutter in the house so it doesn’t become overwhelming?

Wize Guy answers:
I do several things to store what I want from magazines.
1) I use sevaral 3 ring notebooks with different subjects on the cover and I have plastic slip covers for those articles that are several pages that I want to be able to refer to. I take out the pages and put them in the slip covers. This works great for shopping for a remodeling job to go to the store to get the right stuff. The pictures are there and the lists of products used. This can be translated to all categories and subjects from crafts to food.
2) I use a scanner or my camera to take images of recipes and craft projects that I do not need to take with me to another location and can paste them into Word Documents and burn them to a CDRW or a DVDRW.
3) I still want to hang onto magazines that have value to me such as memorials of people who meant something to me or the McCaughy septuplets and other special covers. These I do keep and hold onto.

Steven asks…
Do people really believe that stay at home parents should do nothing but?
be their child’s entertainer all day long?
I get that impression from so many people (both online and offline) that as a stay at home parent it is our sole job and mission to entertain our kids every second of the day. And if you do *anything* without them, then shame on you! God forbid you send a 2 and 4 year old to their room to so you can sit down uninterrupted for 15 minutes and sip on a cup of tea while leafing through a Better Homes and Garden magazine!
Thoughts? Feelings?
I’m just using that scenario as an example. I do enjoy being with my kids and I enjoy spending time with them. I also enjoy my 15 minute tea breaks and their hour and a half rest time

Wize Guy answers:
Work -outside–the-home parents get lunch and coffee breaks.
S@h parents should also be entitled to the same.
IMHO, one of the biggest successes of parenting, S@H parent, or not, is when your children are able to entertain themselves without parental guidance.

Linda asks…
The best-selling women’s magazines are ‘Better Homes and Garden’s’ and ‘Family Circle’. As their titles…
…imply they are about home and family and children. The best selling men’s magazines are Playboy and Maxim. They are about the good life…fun, toys, and access to beautiful women without commitment. If you carry these choices to the logical end where they represent men’s and women’s primary fantasies, then for men marriage means sacrificing their primary fantasy and for women, marriage means fulfilling it. Anyone care to comment?

Wize Guy answers:
Yes…I think you are right on target. men don’t commit, they surrender. But in my husband’s case, he may have sacrificed access to beautiful women (if indeed he COULD get anyone more beautiful than me!) but he says stability and family are most important, fun and extras come next.
Interesting observation…you’re very insightful!

Joseph asks…
where can I find an ergonomic yard rake?
I know someone who has had back surgery but loves to rake. I can’t find any bent handle yard leaf rakes anywhere, they’re supposed to take pressure off the back while raking. I’ve seen them in Better Homes and Garden Magazine but there wasn’t the option to purchase one. Please help.

Wize Guy answers:
We bought one about 5 years ago at Home Depot and we’ve never had to replace it! It was reasonably priced as I recall, and is really nice to use.
Good luck!
