David asks…

A health department estimates that 8 vials of malaria serum will treat 100 people?

A health department estimates that 8 vials of malaria serum will treat 100 people. At this rate, how many vials are required to treat 175 people? Write your answer as a complete sentence.

Wize Guy answers:

8 vials for 100 people
4 vials for 50 people
2 vials for 25 people

25 people is a common factor for both 100 and 175, so that helps.

25 divides *into* 175 seven times

Seven times (2 vials for 25 people) yields 14 vials for 175 people.

The mathematically appropriate way is to find a per-person amount of the serum (in this case, 8 divided by 100 gives 0.08 vials per person) and then multiply by the number of people.

0.08 vials per person times 175 people yields 14 vials (same answer)

Complete sentence:

“Fourteen vials of malaria serum will treat 175 people.”
