Betty asks…

what is the difference between a medical assistant and medical specialist?

I am looking into going back to school to be a medical specialist. I would like to know what the difference is between that and a medical assistant? I live in Missouri if that makes a difference. I know what a medical assistant does but what about the medical specialist?
Oh and by the way, the school I might be going to doesn’t call it a medical office specialist. Just medical specialist.

Wize Guy answers:

the medical specialist is the main man. the medical assistant assist the specialist.

What is the difference between a Medical Assistant and a Licensed Practical Nurse?

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between a medical assistant and a LPN. I mean they both basically do the same thing, just that a LPN is “required” to take additional classes where as a ma only takes the Medical Assistant class. Thanks in advance!

Wize Guy answers:

a medical assistant has very limited capacity and it is not a licensed healthcare professional whereas an LPN means Licensed Practical Nurse and is licenced. Although an LPN must work under an RN it is step in the career ladder which can ultimately lead to Nurse Practitioner – and a lot of independent practice capacity. It depends how far up the ladder you want to go.

Joseph asks…

What jobs would I qualify for as a medical assistant?

What jobs would I qualify for if I get certified as a medical assistant besides medical assistant? My brother’s professor says I could qualify for nurse’s aid also along with medical assistant. What else? What is the job demand for medical assistant? What does the class require? Does this skill transfer easily country to country (say I qualify in the US, will such qualifications be accepted in Europe?) or just within the US?
Answer what questions you can best to your knowledge. I know these question are broad, but that is because I know little. The more information I know, the more defined and detailed further questions will be.
I thank you for your assistance ahead of time. Thank you and have a nice day.

Wize Guy answers:

I’ve heard that there are not too many jobs for the MA (including medical biller and coder). If you would still like to enter a training program, please do so at a lesser expensive school such as the local community college (perhaps non-credit course) or county vo-tech school as opposed to private schools. And please stay away from online schools such as penn foster and stratford career as most employers don’t find them to be reputable. Others have recommended on YA that the person skip the MA training and instead apply for admission to an LPN (licensed practical nurse) program albeit it is supposed to be quite rigorous in the coursework as well as clinicals. It is said thought that there are supposed to be a lot more job opportunities for the lpn (however, not nearly as much as the RN/registered nurse).

John asks…

What is the minimum wpm a medical office assistant should be able to type?

Working on skills to become a medical office assistant or medical assistant (administrative). Practicing on typing skills, and plan to take a course in MOA or MA. What should the minimum wpm be and what should my goal be?

Wize Guy answers:

You need to be able to type at least 40 words a minute or so. Basically you will be doing a lot of data entry when the patient makes an appointment and speed is necessary.

Paul asks…

How much on average does a medical administrator or medical assistant make in TX?

I cant seem to find a local school in the medical field, that offers night classes, my only choices are medical administration or medical assistant…I really wanted to be a ultrasound tech, or radiology tech but there arent any schools in fort worth….so would I make good money being a medical assistant or work in medical administration?

Wize Guy answers:

It depends on if you’re a medical administrator of the hospital or medical administrator of a doctor’s office and it really goes on from there. A good place to look would be to go to the hospital or doctor’s office you would like to work at and ask or get a packet on the rates, or look it up on the internet.
