Michael asks…

Home and garden shows in California?

Hey
I have very nice home decor products(pottery, vases, fountains etc.) importing directly from Thailand.Basically my friend owns a little factory.
I’d like to know more about home and garden shows in California(or Nevada),just to have a better opportunity to spread my products across the country.Everything’s very beautiful and unique(handmade).
I’d really appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.

Wize Guy answers:

I don’t know about California or Nevada, but here in Washington, you have to buy a space at a H&G show. Depending on the size of the show, this cost can get fairly expensive. You want to go to one that is sizable enough to get good exposure, but not so large as to bankrupt you before you even get started. Also, H&G shows tend to run about 6 months off, meaning they have things in the fall for the peak season in the spring and summer. You could try gift shows too. If it is a retail show (open to the public) make sure to give yourself a couple of months head start. The shows probably have a cut off date for new vendors, sometimes up to 6 months. The Christmas season will be here very soon, so if you were planning on doing a Holiday show, you may already be too late, but check anyway. If you are, try for spring shows. Once you get into one, make sure you have plenty of business cards or brochures to hand out. A website would be beneficial to both you and the customer. You could show more product in different settings and they have the chance to think about it and have another look. Good luck!

Best Sheets Ever, I saw them at a Home and Garend Show anyone purchase them?

OK, so at a recent Home and Garden Show I saw this booth, The Best Sheets Ever, here is their website; http://www.thebestsheets.com/

I contacted them and they want $19.99 per set (one flat, one fitted and two pillow cases) plus $10 shipping for up to two sets.

They claim that their sheets are 400 Thread Count. Is that a good count to? Is this a good thing? Does anyone have these sheets/purchased them. Any advice you can give me would be great!

Thanks :)
I’m not looking for other reccomendations, just looking for information on these sheets.

Wize Guy answers:

Do not buy these sheets. I bought them at a Home Show recently and they are extremely thin. They feel soft when you touch them inside the package, but once unfolded you realize they are paper thin.

Mine didn’t stay in place and tore when I tried to get them back on the mattress. I’ve written the company to try to get a refund.

I love good sheets and jumped at these since they seemed like such a deal. By the way, 400 count is usually plenty soft- but these are a scam. Don’t get suckered like I did!

John asks…

Why is there a cold breeze coming in at the base of my direct vent fireplace?

I was told by reps of direct vent fireplace stores at a Home & Garden show that the cold air was conducting from the steel box and there was nothing I could do. Is this true?

Wize Guy answers:

My guess- direct vent furnace and fireplaces vent out the harmful burnt gases to keep you safe. In turn the fireplace naturally will draw cold air into the bottom of the furnace to replace it. That is what is called a “cold air return”. However if you mean that you also have a fresh air intake- you will certainly sense some cold air at the bottom as well. If there is not enough fresh air in the room as you heat you create negative pressure (using up oxygen) which means you’ll get a back flow from the exhaust. That means the furnace draws the only oxygen it can down the chimney to burn a cold air intake protects you from carbon monoxide poisoning.

When you are not using the fireplace you may get a some cold air around the bottom if there isn’t a tight seal at the damper.

I do agree with the next person’s answer as a reason- I did not think about that.
