Richard asks…

Can someone recommend the best chemical product line to use with above ground swimming pools?

There are so many brands out there: Baquacil; hTh; Sustain; Guard X. I know there are more but I do not know all the names.
Is one product line better than another?
Is there one that will not be harsh on your pool liner and filter?
If you do not like one product line can you just switch to another?
Can you mix and match products from one line with another line?
There are several questions with this one please be sure to answer them all. Thanks.

Wize Guy answers:

When I used to work at an above ground pool store we sold Baquacil. That’s also what my parents used in our pool at home. I can’t compare this system to the others that you mentioned, but I can tell you that Baquacil does a great job.

We liked Baquacil a lot, and it didn’t have the destructive effects of chlorine. It’s not harsh on the pool liner, filter, solar cover, or your suits and skin, so no worries there.

If you try one system and decide that you don’t like it, it’s generally not recommended that you just switch, as there may be adverse effects from the chemicals combining. We usually recommended draining the water and adding fresh water because Baquacil and chlorine turn water brown instantly.

Again, you don’t want to mix anything together because you don’t know how it will react.

Michael asks…

What year were above ground swimming pools available for purchase by the public?

Wize Guy answers:

Hi Jude B

The first above ground pool was made with galvanized steel pipe by doughboy. The year was 1946 and was one of MANY products that were born in the post WWII affluence America enjoyed. Before that, I guess they used water troughs. The Above Ground Pool did not become popular until the doughboy company innovated flat top ledges and the pool lost it’s “Tank” appearance and became a pool. In all the years between then and now, there have been advances in materials but the idea of a steel walled pool with a vinyl liner remains one of the most popular choices for above ground pools today.

possibly answers from people who own pools in the yuma az area thank you, what are the best local places to purchase and obtain supplies for pool
if there are people in yuma who have above ground pools ,would like to hear what you have to say about pool care and is it worth the effort to maintain a pool

Wize Guy answers:

They will increase your water bill significantly, because in Yuma, you will lose a lot of water from evaporation, and will have to keep refilling it. You can slow this down with a pool cover, when it’s not in use, but you will still lose water. The pools do require maintenance–you still need to clean and chlorinate. If you don’t have a filter and pump, you will need to drain the pool periodically to thoroughly clean it, to avoid growth of bacteria. (Yes, some bacteria will survive chlorine)

A better choice, IMO, is to go to public pools, especially in a desert climate.

Nancy asks…

What are the tools that are needed to install the above ground swimming pools?

Wize Guy answers:

Not anything big.. Simple tools in tool box like screwdrivers, a hammer, tape measures, some wrenches and a roll of string.. You can also use cordless drills.. Because it is easier to make holes for screws.. Another important tool is laser level.. It is used to level the ground.. And another thing is sod cutter.. It is used to cut the vegetations..
