Nancy asks…
How can I find out the best current CD rates?
Do CD (certificate of deposit) rates vary much among different banks and financial institutions? I am considering placing some money into a CD that would become available when I graduate from school. The rate at the place that I bank with is like 4.80% for like 2.5 years, which sounds good to me. How can I find out the very best rates?
Thanks in advance.

Wize Guy answers:
Try one of the on line savings banks like ING, GMAC, HSBC. All have good rates and low required deposits.
My bank will give me 5% if I have $10,000! LOL.

Where can I find the best CD rates? Is E-Loan a reliable company to do banking with?
I am looking for the highest 9-12 month CD rates. So far the highest I’ve seen is with E-Loan, which has a 12-month CD at 4.35% APY. Is this bank reliable? Do you know of other, safe (FDIC insured) banks with higher 9 to 12 month CD rates?

Wize Guy answers:
Check out bankrate.com. They list current interest rates for multiple products from many sources.

Lisa asks…
What banks or credit unions have the best rates on CD, Cerificate of Deposit Accounts?
I have 5k to put in but dont know where to go I am in California. We have Wells Fargo, Wachovia, Bank of the West ,etc etc I dont care where I go as long as I can get the best rates. Thanks. I’d probabbly leave it in for a year long term, or even 6 months depends on what is better.

Wize Guy answers:
I go to www.bankrate.com – it has constantly-updated rates, which you may sort by APY or rate and choose the best option. Many times it will be an Internet-based bank, such as for example CountryWide Bank, or eLoan.Com Savings. It is a competitive market place so from time to time different banks offer the best current rate.
Also, sometimes Money Market savings accounts (“MMA”) have same or better rate then CD’s without the need to lock the funds in for a period of time.

Best CD rates in Indiana?
What are the best rates for CDs in Indiana? Last fall I had a 4.5% CD but now its down to 2%. Anything better out there?

Wize Guy answers:
Wrong section, but try http://www.bankrate.com/cd.aspx . They list local and national rates.
