Why are Macs often preferred by graphic designers?
A question to the graphic designers of the world–
Why are Macs preferred for so many graphic designers? I’ve used a PC for all of my life and I’ve found Macs kind of, dare I say, confusing. It’ll be hard transitioning from Windows to Mac if I become a graphic designer.
Macs are often required at art schools but I know there are graphic designers who use PCs. What are the disadvantages/advantages for them?

lots use PC…i have done lots of graphic design work and most studios I have worked with or known people that work at use PC. I would say its probably about 70% PC to 30% MAC
but that is still alot more then just your average users so yeah, alot more people that use MACs are your graphic designers and video editors.
But if you are comfortable using a PC then stick with that…its all about what you work better with.
Honestly I think alot of it comes from just the mind set of artistic people….they kinda like to be different and unique…so i think that is why lots of them tend to get MACs..they make them feel “special” or “different”

I’m interested in graphic design as a major in college, but I’m wondering what kind of work one does. I’m interested in several different things, like film and video games, among others. Are there any places for graphic designers there?
Second part: I might major in English and minor in graphic design. Would I still be able to get into those fields, or work for an advertising agency or something, if I did that?

Graphic designers do all sorts of work, like designing magazine ads, billboards, web sites, and many other things.

Graphic designers make different amounts of money depending on what company they work for, how successful they are and who their clients are. i need to find out exactly what kind of sofware is used by graphic designers so that by the time i get to college i won’t be lost. can someone help me out?

Well it depends on what kind of graphic design:
3D design: Maya
2D Design (images, computer art, websites, etc): Photoshop
there are alternatives out there that are free, not as powerful but nice to practice on to get the hang of.
for Photoshop theres GIMP, www.gimp.org
for Maya theres Blender, http://www.blender.org/
theres a whole list of alternative software for your favorite daily used programs (like Microsoft Office)

Depends where you plan to distribute. Cd or web?
Web. Use flash
cd. Use mutiple layer with wmv and QuickTime for pc and mac
