George asks…

Can I have my air conditioning serviced and ducts cleaned in a rental.?

I have owned a home but am now renting. I have lived in my rental, it is a small apartment for a year. in my house I would have the air and heat serviced, checked ever years and the air ducts cleaned if needed.

can i do that in a rental,? I really don’t want to bother my landlord, there is nothing wrong, just want to make sure it is all ‘clean’
my lease does not say anything about it.. I didn’t even think about other then me paying,,

Wize Guy answers:

You need written permission. If the owner has a service and warranty contract with Company A and you hire Company S then that voids the owner’s contract

Nancy asks…

do I have a good case to file a law suit?

my foolish mother hired a company to clean our air ducts, in the process of bringing in their equipment, they broke one of our windows, after that my mother paid them in cash for their service, and got no receipt. When I got home I called the company and they said they would pay for the window if I provided them a receipt, I had the window repaired for $200 and now the company is blocking my phone calls. The only evidence that I have is my mothers eye witness testimony, will that be enough in small claims court?

Wize Guy answers:

Well, they broke your window and they were not willing to pay for them. That is not right. You do have a good case. But I hope you could fight it.

Betty asks…

My A/C just got serviced, coils, freon, cleaned. The outside unit has been running for 12 hrs non-stop!!?

Do I need to add another air vent/duct in the house? Would this help?

Wize Guy answers:

how high is the outside temperature and how warm is it inside and is it blowing cold air and is the place adequately insulated?

Sandra asks…

My central air unit runs all the time?

-eWell our central air unit and furnace runs for hours at a time, and does not cycle. If i set the termostatat 76 and it is 87 degrees outside it will run for 2-3 hours and sometimes kick off. Also when the ac kicks on the blower motor ramps up to high and then after a few seconds it slows down. I have air coming out of some vents with some pressure and 2 of them alot less.

I have closed the duct work down to balance it as best as i could. There is no ice on the lines, and the condesor is clean and not blocked. We just had a service tech replace the capicator on the outside unit. The system is all luxaire its from 1996, i cant seem to find the model number. I tried to check the evaporator coils but the access cover is up against a wall in the basment and i cant get in there.

Wize Guy answers:

It could be a ton of things. Dirty evaporator, dirty filter set, dirty condenser coils, low freon, failing compressor, etc. Your only real choice is to call a tech to come out and look at it.

2001 Hyundai Sonata Idles Rough/Shuts Off Intermittently?

Hi! My 2001 Hyundai Sonata has been idling rough/shutting off intermittently for the last 6-8 months, with the “Check Engine” light coming on only about 2-3 months ago. I have tried cleaning the fuel lines, replacing the IAC motor, and, today, replacing the MAF sensor. It seemed like the problem was fixed after changing the sensor, but it started to idle rough again. (The car will idle @ about 800-1000 RPMs, drop down to about 400-600 and then shoot back up again. Occasionally, after driving for long distances and coming to a stop @ a light, the car will just shut off).

I took the car to my local service station to see why the “Check Engine” light was still on, but there were no pending codes. (The light is off now.) Since this morning, I have changed my air filter and tightened the air ducts, but the car is still idling roughly every so often. What am I missing here? Please help!! I can’t keep dropping money on parts that are not fixing the problem…

Wize Guy answers:

Some 2001 2.4L Sonata customers may complain of one or more of the following conditions:
Rough running.
Rough idle.
Lack of power at low rpm.
Check engine light on (DTC P0335 crankshaft position sensor malfunction).

This condition may be caused by the exhaust camshaft coming out of time. A new timing belt cover that incorporates a timing belt guide has been installed on vehicles produced since January 30, 2001.

Vehicles that experience the condition described above should be updated with the new timing belt cover $22.00. See your local Hyundai dealer. There should be codes in the computer’s history if the new cover does not solve the problem.
