Paul asks…
What does privately commissioned artworks mean?
I just want to know what commissioned artworks means and what goes along with it? Thanks!!!

Wize Guy answers:
It means that a person asks an artist to make an artwork for them. Often they get to decide what the artwork will be.
An example would be that you see a sculpture that you like, you find out who made it then you ring them and ask if you could make one for you. Then the artist says ok for $2000 I will make you a sculpture. This is a private commission.
A public commission is one where a government department asks an artist to build a sculpture for their building and then comes to an agreement about where it will be andwhat it is. usually there are many discussionsabout public art as it effects more people rather than an individual.

Chris asks…
Does it help to put traditional artworks in my online portfolio?Does it give more impact to potential customer?
I’m compiling all my works and plan to create an online portfolio. I want to be a freelance graphic designer but most of my stuff are traditional, only have 3-5 digital pieces.

Wize Guy answers:
im also wanting to do graphic design… what i’ve read so far is that ppl dont want to see traditional art (what i am guess that is is Fine art, like drawing and painting)
i mean, if its an online portfolio, just make a section called ‘side projects’ or ‘other’
or something like that.
its good to show them you have these talents i guess, but that would just be a bonus ontop of what they are REALLY looking for… which is whatever… logos/webdesign/typography or what not…
if i looked at your portfolio, saw some graphic design things, and also traditional art in a separate section, i would be impressed, (if its good) its like talent in 2 areas
like the smart AND sporty kids when u were in school… how u hated them… haha

Donna asks…
Does anyone know any contemporary artists who practises symbolism or uses symbolism in their artworks?
I need to do research on contemporary symbolism artists and I would really like a clear place to start.

Wize Guy answers:
not entirely sure it would qualify but you could check the art of Brody Condon on tmpspace.com, especially his Modifications where he replaces contemporary images for the ones in the medieval paintings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wize Guy answers:
Olley specializes in paintings still life groups (fruits, vases, plates etc) in an interior setting and also portraits. In fact, she paints her domestic world, personal and intimate scenes, including views from the window of her home. .

Susan asks…
Does anybody know what material Ralph Steadman uses to create his artworks?
Doing an art assignment and I can’t find this info anywhere. I am assuming he uses ink and paint, but would like it confirmed..
Thanks

Wize Guy answers:
Ralph Steadman uses almost exclusively Pen and Ink. Colors are various washes of ink, the black lines are penned with Lamy Pens.
hope that helped.
