Lizzie asks…

Salt Water swimming Pools??? Is it true that almost all new pools are salty? Can u keep pet sharks in it?

I heard a pool expert on the radio say that 95% of all new pools he installs these days are salt water. I never heard of a salt water pool!!

Are they better than fresh water chlorine pools? Do you float better? Can you keep pet sharks in it?

Wize Guy answers:

He means they are selling the equipment to use salt in the water(table or solarsalt-sodium chloride)to generate useable chlorine for sanitation(hypochlorous acid).the usable chlorine is quickly converted back to salt again to be cycled thru the generator.Better is arguable. Not enough salt to affect buoyancy substantially.ocean sharks(saltwater)should be in water created in the same way used in the Georgia aqaurium(dont know the name of it but it has the largest window around, featured on the today show). They add bags of a mixture that so closely mimics seawater that they do not need to be located near an oceanwater source.

Ruth asks…

Are salt water swimming pools bad for you? I’ve heard they are bad, but I’m not sure what to believe?

I heard that the newer, salt water swimming pool systems are bad for people. But then, I heard this from a company that does not sell them and instead offers some sort of alternative.

So I don’t know what to think.

Are salt water swimming pools bad for you?

Wize Guy answers:

No, sale water swimming pool systems are not bad in any way for people. The salt is at a VERY low concentration so the water does not taste or smell salty and the water will not leave salt residue as it dries on towels or swimwear.

In regards to human health, a saltwater pool system is competely 100% healthy.

Donna asks…

Why do we not have more salt water swimming pools and can they be indoor pools?

Salt water seems like it would be much safer (almost impossible to drown) and would be more fun and relaxing to just float around in.

Wize Guy answers:

If you want to swim in salt water, you could just go to your local beaches, right. Also, I am certain that people do get drown in salt water.

Charles asks…

Can anyone tell me what is the advantage of having a salt water swimming pool, and a chlorine pool?

I am looking to purchase a home in Florida, and notice that some are offering salt water pools. Are they cheaper to run? How about corrosion? Does anyone have a salt pool?

Wize Guy answers:

Salt water pools are more expensive to run as the cell has to be changed every 2 years and cleaned every 3 months. You can do these yourself but the cell at a pool store will cost you a few hundred. The only real asset to a salt pool is if chemicals bother you, it may be your answer although you will still need to use shock and other chems when needed. Another is the cost of the equiptment itself needed to run it. And you need to know how to operate it unless you hire a company to maintain it. If you over salt the pool, the system won’t work and draining the pool is the only way you can bring the salt levels down. If you want simple……go bromine or clorine.
