George asks…

What does the spanish word dabiñe mean?

Don’t tell me it isn’t a word, i know it is, and I know that it is a slang/vulgar word. I remember finding an entry in wiktionary but I can’t find it anymore.

Wize Guy answers:

that entry in wiktionary was deleted, maybe because there is no proof that this “word” is actually used in any context.
I never heard that word (and I met many people from different parts of Latin America), never read it (not even in works where the authors use vulgar and slang vocabulary).
The only reference is that entry in Urbandictionary. But that is not proof. Everybody can submit an entry in Urbandictionary (and also in wikipedia). You can make up a new word and submit it there. It doesn’t mean “your” word has any validity, until people start to use it.

Why does Wikipedia feel the need to stick their nose into everyone’s business?

With WikiAnswers and WikiQuote and Wiktionary. Why can’t it just be plain old Wikipedia? Hmph.

Wize Guy answers:

Wikiquote and Wiktionary are indeed run by the same organisation as Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation. The Foundation is a charitable organisation with a mission to develop and spread free educational content of all kinds. With the success of Wikipedia it seemed like a good idea to develop other such resources using a wiki.
Most other websites have content which is restricted in some form, requiring payment and/or restricting the rights of users to use it as they wish. The Wikimedia sites are committed to only producing works which are free as defined at http://freedomdefined.org/Definition

WikiAnswers is an entirely separate website owned by Answers Corporation.

Thomas asks…

Does anyone know where I can obtain an onomatopoeia spelling dictionary, if such a thing exists?

I’m a reality TV transcriptionist who could really use this for accuracy’s sake. I have googled this phrase, but it only produces a couple of words on Wiktionary. Thanks. :-)

Wize Guy answers:

unless your boss has been getting on you for misspelling words that are made-up anyway, i wouldn’t worry about it.

onomatopoeia words by definition don’t really have a “correct” spelling. if you’re trying to use a word that exactly describes a sound but is kinda complicated, i’d go with a simpler word. in reality (no pun intended) your guess is as good as anyone’s

Why does Yahoo Answers censor: this is supposed to be an adult forum?

I typed this Latin phrase: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cum_laude meaning “with praise,” when appended to a degree. It got censored. This is wrong and there is no excuse for it. This kind of censorship stifles basic communication.

Wize Guy answers:

Really, they censor see-you-em now?

Well Yahoo always defends this (or at least its loyal followers do) by claiming that people as young as 13 are on this site (which is true, probably younger as well).

This doesn’t actually excuse censorship if you think about it. Why censor words because there are children? What are we protecting them from? A bite from the wretched tree of knowledge?

In any case, we can’t technically complain because Yahoo is a private company and we are all rights-limited consumers. It’s up to them what words they allow, it’s their property.

Wait, why am I giving them intellectual property for free?
