As research is conducted across many institutions, the field of nutrition keeps on growing and growing. In fact, you can expect to see exponential increases in this field as obesity rates keep on rising.

The bad news is that a lot of vital information can get lost in the vast sea of knowledge.

So here are some commonly overlooked things about dieting:

1. Food quality affects more than just energy: When you are trying to lose weight, the quality of food you eat will not only affect energy levels, but it will also affect how many calories go towards fat cells. So eating good food isn’t just about energy or health, it’s about weight gain.

2. Fat is inside you, not just under your skin: Most people forget that fat is inside of them because they can only see the fat that is under their skin. Even worse, you can be extremely skinny and very unhealthy if you have lots of fat around your organs.

3. Not all saturated fat is created equal: In fact, saturated fat from plant sources can be extremely healthy for you. One versatile source of plant saturated fat is coconut. Keep in mind that plant saturated fat and animal saturated fat are structurally different.

4. Increases in blood sugar decrease active tissue nutrition: Your active tissues are muscles, organs and brain. When you spike blood sugar these structures shut down their nutrient entry ways as a protective mechanism. Then end result is more calories going to fat cells.

5. Going on a super low calorie diet is very bad for you: There is no benefit to eating less than 1200 calories per day. If you go below this level, you run the risk of some serious health issues like hair loss and reproductive system shutdown.

6. Powdered fiber is not good for you: The best way to get your fiber is with solid food, not supplements. In fact, some research has shown that supplementing with fiber can actually increase cancer rates. So make sure you stick with whole foods here.

The field of nutrition is always going to be providing new insights. The key here, however, is to not suffer from analysis paralysis. Instead, take immediate action on this information now!
