Use a co. that uses a video camera this will ensure they are doing a thorough job. You can also hang out where the video screen is to be sure they do it right.

John asks…
Which type of air duct cleaning system is better? ?
Which type of air duct cleaning system is better, the type like a Rotobrush where you stick a vacuum with a brush inside and clean the ducts that way. There’s also another system where it uses negative air pressure to blow all the debris to one area where you can clean it out.
A buddy of mine is looking to start doing this service so I’m asking this for him. He’s looking at the Rotobrush and the Nikro System.
http://www.rotobrush.com/
http://www.nikro.com/startup.htm
My buddy is looknig to buy one of these systems. The people trying to sell to him both say theirs is better and have compalints about the other system of course. Can you offer some advice. Which cleans better? Which is easier to use? etc.

Wize Guy answers:
Rotobrush has had several issues since its inception. Most good duct cleaning companies I know refuse to use it.
Shop around some more.

Carpet cleaners in Naperville IL?
I would greatly appreciate recommendations for the carpet cleaning & air duct cleaning service providers in Naperville? How much should I expect to pay for cleaning of a 4 bedroom house? (4 bedrooms, family, living, dining, recreation & 2 hallways + 3 half stairs)
Thanks!

Wize Guy answers:
Cost shouldn’t always be a factor when deciding to choose a carpet cleaner. Many places have hidden costs and fees that you aren’ told about. Here are some things to ask when you call around for prices:
Price – do they charge by the square foot or room. (cleaners that charge by the room will charge for sqaure footage that isn;t even being cleaned, for ex. under a bed)
What do they provide for that price? – some cleaners will do all vacuuming, basic spot removal, and the moving of furniture for their normal fee, some charge outrageous fees for these things.
Dry time? – mold and mildew can start to grow after about 4 hours of moisture so you want something that will dry in less that 3 hours.
Cleaning chemicals? – stay away from soap, it is a dirt attractant and will only make the carpets get dirty faster. Carbonation is your best bet (ChemDry)
history of customers – ask them how long they’ve bneen in business, any special public voted awards or acheivements? What is their percent of repeat customers?
Name? – Have they changed their name alot. this is usually a sign that their business sticks and they have to change their name to dup customers into using them again.
Insured? – make sure they are insured and bonded in case something would go wring, ex. something would get broke or damaged, while that isnt ideal it does happen. accidents do occur, you want to know that they will fix whatever is broken.

George asks…
Asbestos insulation in home?
I just had an air duct cleaning service person tell me I have asbestos insulation in the attic and ducts and we’ve been circulating the air from the heater and A/C for 6 months now. This is a rental home, do we have any rights to request an overhaul to remove it, should we be concerned since we only lived here a short time about health hazards (we have a 3 year old and a newborn). Please advise.

Wize Guy answers:
Tough question…. I doubt that asbestos was inside the ductwork. It could have been used to insulate outside the duct. Asbestos is only dangerous in a friable condition. That means that particles have flaked off, become air borne, and you have breathed them into your lungs. If the asbestos is encapsulated by paper, paint, etc. you are fine.
Do not disturb it.
That said, I don’t know that I would want to raise small children in this invironment. I wouldn’t want to take the chance. Asbesos removal is very expensive, so I doubt your landlord will do anything about it. I would move out, but that is your decision.
