Laura asks…

Is a big Home Show worth the price for advertising and selling?

We own a small furniture company where we make custom wood furniture and children’s furniture and have just started and need to get our name out there, sell, advertise more, etc. Is a big Home Show worth it, like a Decorating and Remodeling Home Show for our State? It’s VERY expensive for our budget and we’d have to take out a big business loan for a small business.
Is this something worth getting into debt for and what are the possible/potential returns from selling at a four day Home & Garden Show?

Wize Guy answers:

I go into trade shows for my business. I find that the payback comes from “word of mouth” after establishing customers as a result of exhibiting. They are very expensive though, and you must be selective as to which ones you go into. What I usually do myself – is attend the show one year, and go around and ask the exhibitors what they think of it. If the responses are favorable, then I will exhibit in it the following year.
You have a ‘in demand’ product for the right market. Good custom wood furniture – and childrens furniture is hard to come by. People love to have furniture such as this, that they can say was custom made, or made especially for them. But the question is, does this show draw the appropriate ‘income bracket’ that can afford your product. If so – then I would do it. I find that getting my product out and in the face of the public works greater than print advertising.
Good Luck – God Bless

Does the television show Home Garden Television (HGTV) influence you to improve your home and garden?

Wize Guy answers:

First, it is not a “television show,” but a “television channel” full of individual shows on home and garden improvement, decorating, etc.

Yes, the network channel does inspire many people to improve the looks of their homes and gardens. It provides many useful shows that help the watcher learn to repair minor problems (leaky faucets) and to hire contractors to repair major problems (water leakage in the basement).

It is useful and informative.

Sandra asks…

Have you been to the Home and Garden Show in St.Louis, or Nashville?

This year they are during the same week. I am trying to decide which one would be best to attend. Have you been to either/both in the past and what did you think of them.
thanks

Wize Guy answers:

I’ve been to the one in St. Louis. I enjoyed it. There were many interesting, fun things to see. Lots of useful information booths, too. I went a couple of years ago to the one in downtown St. Louis. If you enjoy home decor and, especially, gardening and landscaping, I think you’d enjoy the show.

Sandy asks…

Anyone know the name of this multi-power tool shown at home & garden shows?

Years ago I attended a H&G show and saw a vendor demonstrating something like a 10-powertools-in-1 kind of a setup. I remember that it can lathe, route, cut, grind, and a vacuum attachment plus more. The salesman made a “round on a post” (as the end of a leg on a table or chair or bedpost) in just a few minutes. And the whole thing can be rolled away and stored in a rather economical space. Anyone know the name of this tool / vendor?
