Automotive Paint?

I was just buying paint for 1997 silver mitsubishi eclipse and i saw that online they sale 1 quart or good OEM car paint for $75, so my questions was is that enough paint to paint the basecoat of my bumper and my two fenders (in few words how much can you paint with one quart of car basecoat paint)?

Thank You

Wize Guy answers:

Quite a bit, some paints have different ratios but most paints thin at least 1:1 thats a half gallon of paint dude, if you use a gravity feed hvlp paint gun your paint will go farther because there is less overspray, It also depends on if the original color is the same as the paint your buying, some colors are harder to cover. Unless something drastic happens you should have plenty. Don’t forget reducer/thinner dude.

How much money does automotive paint cost to repaint one car?

I have a 92 BMW 525 and the paint is starting to show its wear. I am looking to repaint the whole car and get a friends to do it in his shop. He is only charging me for paint and not labor. How much can i expect a regular grade automotive enough to cover a whole car? thanks

Wize Guy answers:

Depends on the company Dupont, PPG, Sherman Williams, Diamont, also depends on color and flakes( pear, micca, crushed glass soforth.) paint could cost any where from 30 to 50 dollars for single stage color, 20 to 30 dollars more for metalic additive normally micca per pint. To paint a whole exterior of a car general requires 2 to 3 quarts, about equal amount clear coat generally urathane about 110 to 160 depending on grade quality and other materials like hardner and reducer together about 100 dollars and extra 10 to 30 dollars for masking paper and tape. lot of physical labor required to paint a car right must be good friend.

What was the old lead based automotive paint called?

What was the old school automotive paint they used to use called, I think it was a lead based paint and that is why they stopped using it. I’m pretty sure I remember it was sposed to have a deeper finish. Anybody know what I’m talking about? I can’t remember the type of paint or finish that was, or what it was called??

Wize Guy answers:

In the beginning there was nitrocellulose based lacquer,it was made obsolete by acrylic lacquer.
As for enamels, there was alkyd enamel [Dupont Dulux for example].They were based on natural oils,They were obsoleted by acrylic then urethane enamels.
Lead was used as a white pigment in the old paints then replaced by titanium dioxide.
The antique paint technologies were great in their day but modern finishes are far superior in all ways.

Where can I get Orange Automotive Paint?

I have finished my Jeep and looking to repaint it orange. I have painted my last car but it was just basic black and very easy to find. I’m having a real hard time finding Orange Automotive Paint. Any website, phone number, or tips are greatly appreciated.

Wize Guy answers:

Depending on where you want to go you can get paint at any automotive store that paintshops use or online. Mainly depends on what actual orange color you want. There are tons of choices. If you want a regular orange, hugger orange, tangerine, pearl orange etc. Best bet is go to a dealership and ask to see a paint chip book or look online at www.houseofkolors.com I think they have a paint chip section but it wont be as nice as one from a dealership, you wonty be able to see the metal flakes etc. Or just type in automotive paints on google. Hope this helps!
