Is there a way that we can avoid wrinkles, lines, dry skin, and other problems from making our skin look as old as we are? It almost seems like yesterday when we were much younger, feeling that the day our skin would dry out and/or look old would never happen ? remember those fun hours spent sunbathing or getting a tan on the beach?

Let us face it ? we are older now and the once so youthful skin we once enjoyed now feels dry and coarse. Is there any way at all to look and feel younger and get some of that glow back into our skin?

First of all, there are two types of aging we need to look out for ? intrinsic aging, which is based on our genes, and extrinsic aging, which results from external factors like the sun. While it is possible to reduce age’s effects on our skin, let’s set expectations clearly ? there would be some aging to the skin we cannot do anything about.

Minimizing repetitive facial expressions. It may be second nature for us to make facial expressions, but too much of these smiles and frowns, as well as raising your brow, could lead to deeper lines and older-looking skin.

The way you sleep could make a big difference. It may be a habit for most of us to either sleep sideways with our cheek against the pillow or face-down pressed against the pillow. This could lead to sleep lines forming in your chin and cheeks. Sleeping on your back, on the other hand, would minimize the effects of sleep lines on your face.

Smoking kills and makes you look old, so what’s that thing you’re lighting up? We all know about smoking’s health risks, but it can also be detrimental to your skin’s youthful appearance, making it feel leathery and look yellowish. If you quit smoking you can kill two birds with one stone ? enjoy better overall health and say goodbye to the yellowish tint and wrinkles.

Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach ? you can use it everyday. It is much advisable to use sunscreen everyday as part of your goal to make your skin look more youthful. The best sunscreen to use should be at least 15 SPF, with a broad spectrum, or UVA/UVB protector.

There are several medical processes you can undergo to combat intrinsic aging, and these include botulinum (more popularly known as Botox), chemical peeling, injections, and dermabrasion.

Instead of undergoing a full face lift, radio frequency is a newfangled alternative that you can consider if you have the cash.

These are all tried and tested tips but this shouldn’t stop you from seeking expert advice from a dermatologist. There are newer and better treatment options becoming available all the time, and your dermatologist should be able to suggest a treatment for you and your type of skin.
