It is indeed terrifying to be struck by catastrophe but when such a situation occurs we need a plan for immediate evacuation, provisions, communication, and transport to save the family. The children must know what to do in such situations or if they are too small they have to be reached. However, an efficient plan can be developed by having the necessary resources available all the time. The correct items have to be packed in your emergency kits. Hence it is important to equip oneself with all the knowledge regarding relief during a crisis.

Learn about the particular risk that your area is more prone to and prepare accordingly. Some areas are prone to a particular form of catastrophe, such as hurricanes often occur in Louisiana or earthquakes are more likely to occur in California. Other disasters such as floods, tornadoes, chemical spills or a radiation leakage are more probable in specific areas. Identify these and make the preparation keeping the particular disaster in mind.

Wherever you are, it is important to be reachable and hence all family members must be provided with some means of contacting one another. Communication with the family is possible nowadays with the cell phone if one has a prepaid connection. You can also call 9-1-1 for help but sometimes the tower may be absent or coverage may not be enough. Hence as an alternative one should also have a prepaid card for calling up from regular booths. Sometimes, all lines are very busy during times of stress and hence one must tire of calling and must make repeated attempts. You can also send text messages which dont need a powerful signal and for this all members of the family must be familiar with texting.

A particular person living outside your city must be named as a contact member for times of disaster so that all members can contact him. All details of contact of this person must be given so that he can co-ordinate with all the family people during a crisis.

You can also make use of radios by having a walkie-talkie installed in your vehicle as well as those of the other family members. Communication through this is fairly easy and quick. Do keep extra batteries with you for an emergency.
