Big trucks are the heaviest kind of trucks that are allowed on our roads. They are mostly used for long distance trips. As you probably know a truck is a large vehicle used for sending goods from one place to another.
You probably wont know that the word truck is derived from the Greek word “Trochos” meaning “wheel”.
Not surprisingly trucks have a huge effect on the condition of our roads. And because of their size it means roads get damaged. In the majority of countries with good quality roads trucks aren’t allowed to carry more than 50,000 kg.
Not surprisingly trucks also send out a lot of pollution into our atmosphere. A heavy duty vehicle is pretty much anything heavier than 8.5 thousand pounds.
You probably don’t know that a truck is apparently not allowed to legally emit the equivalent of around 12 cars. But often times when tested some trucks are emitting 10 times that amount.
Cars are the vehicles most effected in the cities and suburbs. Because traffic drives so close together a car can be very vulnerable to a truck because of the trucks size and weight.
A worrying statistic shows that when it comes to accidents between a car and a big truck over 90%+ the people in the car die. This is why a lot of people are scared to share the roads with trucks.
Because of their size trucks cause air turbulence that can either suck a car in under it’s wheels or push the car away. Either of these could could cause a very serious accident.
However it’s nice to know that even though these huge beasts can be so dangerous the drivers are often trained to a very high standard and according to some statistics show that commercial truck drivers are some of the safest drivers on the roads.
And statistics also show that accidents involving trucks have gone down over 20% compared to 10 years ago.
