After a thorough examination and evaluation by a physician, the chronic snorers may be advised by the doctor to minimize alcohol intake prior to going to bed, to lose some weight, or to change his or her sleeping position. Oral appliances, such as a specially fitted mouthpiece, can be used to ease the snoring. The mouthpiece works by adjusting the position of the tongue so that it does not block a person’s air passage while he or she is asleep.
There are people who would opt for traditional surgery in order to tighten throat tissues so that these do not obstruct one’s air passage while one is sleeping. The procedure to tighten the muscles of the throat is called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.
