Kojic Acid originated in Japan. It is from a fungus named Koji, which is developed during the fermentation of the malt rice for the Japanese rice wine known as sake. Presently, it is used in cosmetics for skin lightening.

While hydroquinone works by inhibiting the tyrosinase’s activity, this acid lightens the skin by suppressing the activity of the tyrosinase. It does skin whitening safely and it is known globally for its effective whitening.

This ingredient is used only in limited applications because of its sensitivity. When used in cosmetology, just a slight exposure to sunlight and air will damage the acid. Therefore, it is best to preserve it in ampoules.

What is good about this is that, it does not pose any health problem. According to the Scientific Committee on Commercial Products or SCCP, it does not cause cancer. In other words, it is not carcinogenic and genotoxic. It does not even pose problems on the human reproductive system. There may be some health threats but they are limited to 1% concentration level.

During the testing of the Kojic acid on the skin, a side effect was found. It increases the level of the skin’s sensitivity which is not a good sign. This is because an increase in the skin’s sensitivity leads to allergic contact.

There are other areas where it can be used. These are the following:

* It is used in the field of medicine as a significant component in antibiotics: anodyne, antiphlogistic production and cephamycin.

* In food preservation, it is added in meats to preserve the color. It is a good antioxidant and antiseptic.

* It is used also to maintain and preserve the color and freshness of the flowers.

* Research shows that it is a pollution-free ingredient and that is why it is included as an ingredient of several insecticides and pesticides.

Usually, Kojic acid is included in some skin whiteners that may come in the form of soap, lightening lotions and creams. Further studies are conducted to study Kojic acid.
