A grill is a familiar site in many backyards across the country. Some of the types you may find are charcoal, gas or fire pits. One type that may be seen more frequently are the infrared grills. They have been around since the early eighties but are gaining more popularity recently.
Many people ask the question how are these grills different from any other. The main reason is in the way they cook the food. Some people may think because it is infrared it does not use a flame or gas. This is not true. To start this grill you will still have to use some sort of propane or natural gas. Once lit this will heat up a ceramic tile in the bottom of the grill.
The way traditional grills cook the food is through convection or conduction. They use hot air to heat the food. This can lead to not cooking the food evenly. The infrared grill does not cook through either of these methods. This grill cooks with heat by radiation. There is a misconception that would mean cooking with a laser. That is not true. Some may think to compare this with a microwave but they do not cook the same. With a microwave, you can have hot spots in your food and also not have it cooked in other spots.
Once lit, there is a ceramic tile in the bottom of the grill that is heated. This will take some time to do. This grill will get much hotter, much faster than a typical grill. Cooking through radiation means that your food will cook more evenly throughout the meat. When cooking with a traditional grill there can be problems of having one part more done than the other. Using this infrared grill will cut your actual cooking time in half.
There is still much speculation on whether cooking with radiation is safe. Many people did not want the microwave when it first came out but now microwaves are everywhere. No one is really sure what the side effects, if any, are of cooking with this method. Whether it is safe for you to cook your food with this type is solely one of a personal opinion.
One other advantage of cooking with this grill is it can be used in any type of weather. Rain, wind, and colder temperatures all affect cooking and heating of a traditional grill. This does not happen with an infrared. Also, there are less flareups on this grill. Anything that falls down on the tile will basically vaporize. With charcoal grills there can be flames and fires flare up that is dangerous and can burn the food. This does make you able to monitor the grill from farther distances and makes it safer for everyone around.
A grill is a great, healthy way to prepare your meat and other foods. Although some grills are only used during the summer, you can use the infrared year round. Research the type of grills available before buying. Talk with your families to make sure which type will work best for you.
