The term salsa is associated with a variety of different dishes from all over the world. Although for the most part salsa is identified as particular variety of Mexican sauce. Although there are many different types of authentic Mexican salsas, most contain tomatoes. Depending on the type of salsa prepared, the tomatoes can be mixed with a variety of ingredients, often onions and chili peppers. There are also a variety of ways to prepare Mexican salsas. They can be cooked or served fresh. The ingredients can also be roasted, grilled, or sauteed first.

Salsa are often used as dips or as a side dish. Mexican dishes rely on sauces to get that tingy taste and a salsa complements the tastes of most Mexican dishes.. Salsas have the unique ability to enhance or tone down the flavors of the popular Mexican dishes, for ex they can bring out the flavor in tortillas or tone down the strong flavor of cheese and ground meat.. Salsa offer health benefits too and this is one of the reasons why it is so popular.

It possesses some disease fighting substances and nutrients like phytochemicals and capsaicin that is induced by ingredients like tomatoes and pepper. Salsas have therefore thought of as healthy flavorful side dishes, appetizers, dips and toppings. Salsas are served along with most of the popular Mexican dishes like tortillas and with almost all meat and poultry preparations. Salsa is so popular that many have and experimented and created different recipes around it over the years. Salsas are now made with various ingredients – various fruits, spices, herbs and even with artificial flavors.

Pestle and Mexican mortar were initially prepared using the main salsa ingredients. These days lot of the work is done by food processors and blenders. Although the aroma that the traditional methods bring is much more satisfying than any achieved by modern gadget.

By nature Mexican salsas are supposed to be hot and spicy. You may adjust the spiciness according to your taste. The authentic Mexican Salsas are actually not all that hot. You could consider adding a serrano and a couple of chilli peppers and that will be enough. Some people use green tomatoes instead of the customary tomatillos, but believe me, the two are different and the latter has a husk around it .

Many of the ingredients used to make salsa are often roasted in an open fire. Nowadays majority of roasting is done with an outdoor grill or in the oven. Grilling your ingredients will also make it easier for you to peel your ingredients. Do remember though that you must not wash your tomatoes and peppers while peeling. The water can wash away part of the flavor that has been derived through the grilling process.
