You might well wonder why people would be so desperate to seek sciatica treatment. Imagine this little scenario then – you’re walking down your stairs when your left leg buckles without warning and is suddenly unable to support you. Off balance, you stumble but are lucky enough to catch the barrister and keep yourself from falling. You feel a sharp pain coming from your spine and going all the way down your leg. It’s enough to make the leg go numb, rendering you unable to move. Wouldn’t you seek sciatica treatments of this happened to you?

The sciatic nerves can cause extreme acute pain simply because they’re the biggest nerve group in the body, ranging from the spine’s base to the tip of your toes. Any bit of constricting pressure can trigger excruciating pain. On a scale of 1 – 10, sufferers usually can take pain up to about 7, with 1 meaning a mild tingle and a 9 to 10 debilitating pain. Any injury to the back or abnormal pressure can trigger an attack, sometimes with no warning at all.

It is very important to get a physical with the doctor to determine the cause of pain as the right type of treatment can relieve the symptoms almost immediately and keep pain at bay. If there is no treatment, however, or the sciatica treatments applied are the wrong ones (as what can happen with self-diagnosis), the nerve can be permanently damaged and the calf muscle may deteriorate over time. Bladder and inexplicable tingling and numbness in the area may occur as well.

Old-school sciatica treatments involved painkillers, prolonged bed rest to promote immobility, surgery, and little else. Unfortunately, these all showed few signs of success, the modern take on sciatica treatments involves the application of bulging disc treatments with a better rate of success.

The sciatica treatments being practiced over the past few years have seen more and more concerned physicians looking at alternatives over conventional practices. Bed rest is discouraged and mild exercise is recommended. Hot compresses relax the muscles over the 48-hour duration. Anti-inflammatory painkillers and steroid injections are prescribed although the relief is just temporary. Coupled with lifestyle changes like changes in work habits, stress management, posture correction, physical therapy, hypnotherapy, and acupuncture, this program yields a lot of relief over its 3 month period.

But if there is little or no recovery after all this, there is still the final card for sciatica treatment being held by the doctor. Surgery is the final option here. However, it’s only in extreme cases these days that surgery is practiced. At this time, it’s only reserved for people that suffer a loss of memory or bladder or bowel control loss. These symptoms show that what the patient has is a severe case, although they are not common at all. But then once again, surgery is not very common for sciatica treatment.
