People who are overwieght are at risk of contracting type 2 diabetes. Obesity is a major contributor to this disease.
This strongly suggests that those of us who are diabetic and overweight have an aversion to exercise.
This reluctance to exercise is often built on a misconception, that being that in order to exercise we have to pay regular visits to a gym. After all, with the exception of those super confident souls, many of us feel embarrassed to puff and wheeze and flaunt our overweight bodies next to fit and supple lycra clad individuals in the gym!
So forget about the gym for the moment – as you progress you may get the bug for exercise and want to join up, but simply going for a walk has been proved to make a big difference to our health. Walking an extra 2 miles a day only takes about three quarters of an hour.
In fact the distance you walk is not really important – it’s the time. If you walk in one direction for about ten minutes, then ten minutes back, that’s a total of twenty minutes, which is proved to have a positive health effect, on diabetics in particular.
If the garden needs tidying, great! Twenty minutes or more gardening is as good as a walk.
Bear in mind when considering how to exercise, aerobic exercise is what you want to be doing as a type 2 diabetic. Aerobic exercise is exercise with low impact and can be sustained without straining for longer periods than anaerobic, which are concentrated short bursts of energy.
The reason for doing this is this.
As you exercise, the body needs more energy, and this is produced from the glucose and fat stored in the body. The glucose initially comes from the stored glucose in the liver, where it is stored as glycogen. As you keep exercising, and this is where you will see the value of the more consistent aerobic exercise, the stored glucose is used up, and the body starts to use fat as energy. Fat is the preferred source of energy for aerobic exercise, as it actually provides more energy than an equivalent amount of glucose, and it benefits us, as we want to lose the fat!
It’s not just wieght loss either. Other conditions are less likely when we exercise regularly, heart disease for example and bad cholesterol levels are reduced.
